"When everything in my life was going crazy, AVARY was the one thing I could count on."
- Avary Graduate

Project AVARY is a nonprofit, community based program for youth with a parent in prison or jail.

Summer Camp is just around the corner and we are seeking counselors to join a committed and diverse staff community serving youth with a parent in prison or jail. Please click the tab "Come work at Camp" for more information.

What does it mean to lose your parent to incarceration?  Read Will's story, a graduate of the program...

The first time I came to camp I was 9.  It was a lot of fun.  I learned to swim, and slept out under the stars for the first time.  But the best part was meeting other kids just like me.  We all had the same situation.  It made it easy to trust people.  Most of the time it's hard for me to trust new people.  I don't know if they will judge me because of things about my parents.  At Avary, I didn't have to think twice about it.

Growing up in the program, I have had my ups and downs.  Sometimes I have made bad decisions, but there was always someone around at Avary who would talk to me and help me get back on track.  This last year I was the assistant program director at camp. It felt good to have that responsibility.  Now I am working and going to school.  I know I can do something positive with my life.

I think people should support Avary because it is a place for kids to get away from all the drama at home and in the city.  It's a safe place where kids can experience something else, like learning how to hike, ski, appreciating nature and meeting new people.  Most of all it is a place where you understand that you don't have to live the lifestyle of your parents.  You can make your own choices. I am doing my part to help Avary. I hope you will too.

There is only one Avary, and it is unique!

Sincerely,

Will Moore
